Zeus
This week I decided to write about Zeus, the god of the sky, controls lightning, and he was considered the ruler of olympian gods. He was the last child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. He was the only one that wasn't swallowed by his father. Cronus saw that his children were becoming to powerful he thought that his kids were going to overthrow him, so he started swallowing his children which were Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. Zeus was not swallowed because his mother Rhea hid Zeus from Chronus and he was raised in the forest by Nymphs. His brothers and sisters never died in Cronus stomach but they couldn't get out. Zeus ended up overthrowing his fathers throne when one day he decided that he wanted to save his brothers and sisters. Zeus had an ability to change or turn himself into any person or animal. He disguised himself to something that Cronus wouldn't recognize him by. He gave Cronus a special potion and when Cronus drank it, he coughed up all five of his children. Zeus had a famous and common weapon, this weapon was a thunderbolt, which he hurled to people that displeased or disrespected him. Zeus had many affairs with different woman even though he was married to Hera. Hera was Zeus' sister and she was also the goddess of patron and marriage. He tricked Hera into marrying him by disguising himself into a hurt bird. He raped Hera and she felt so shameful, she married him. They had many children Zeus wasn't a bad god just because he did this to Hera. Zeus watched over all people/ the community, and was the protector of the people.
Zeus is so important to Greek mythology. Great pick!
ReplyDeleteCool facts about Zeus! I think it's really interesting how throughout the book, when Odysseus and other people introduced themselves, they would say something like "I am the great Odysseus, in the line of Zeus." It made it sound like if your were in the line of Zeus, then you were of higher blood, or had higher status. I also think Zeus plays a pretty important role in The Odyssey because he basically controls everything, even the other Gods.
ReplyDeletePicking Zeus and talking about him was an interesting choice. He's certainly a significant figure in Greek mythology, as Claire said. Not to be picky, but if I had to say something to improve, I'd tell you to write it like a story so it doesn't sound so mechanical. Anyway, good post!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea for a post. Zeus was mentioned often in the Odyssey, but not in too much detail. Zeus is very important in the book, and I think it's great that you decided to look into him more. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteAs Andrew said Zeus is not describing in depth in the book, so it is nice get a better understanding of the character. Good job!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME POST BBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zeus played a huge role in the story so it was good to have some background on him!
ReplyDeleteGood post, thanks for giving us a better understanding and comprehension of the role Zeus played in the Odyssey.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if raping a women was seen differently in Ancient Greece? I didn't know Zeus had raped Hera, and definitely did not expect that from the god of gods. What do you guys think?
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting post, and it's nice to get some background on Zeus. I was very intrigued, though, that you said Zeus is not a bad man for fooling Hera, his own sister, and then raping her and shaming her into marriage. This is not even to mention the fact that even once they were married, he had many affairs with other women. I understand that this was more acceptable in the misogynistic culture of the time, but I think looking back on the story now, it doesn't seem fair to say that just because Zeus was generally a good man, he should be excused for the terrible things he did.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I would like to know more about why you picked Zeus. Is it his role in the story? I would just like to get some understanding due to the fact that a god like Athena plays a much bigger role.
ReplyDeleteZeus is king of the gods and, like Odysseus, he has a queen. Also, like hunter said, Zeus has cheated on Hera and in my post, talked about if Odysseus was a good husband. The two have a lot in common: both are kings and both have important children in the story.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. Zeus has always been a very interesting character for me, because of his impact on his siblings, children, and the mortals. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI liked the amount of information and you have a lot of words. Grate job!
